    About BSC
  • The Barcelona Supercomputing Center
  • Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain. It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, and is a hosting member of the PRACE European distributed supercomputing infrastructure. The mission of BSC is to research, develop and manage information technologies in order to facilitate scientific progress. BSC combines HPC service provision and R&D into both computer and computational science (life, earth and engineering sciences) under one roof, and currently has over 770 staff from 55 countries.
  • Look at the BSC experience:

  • Let's stay connected with BSC Folks
  • We are particularly interested for this role in the strengths and lived experiences of women and underrepresented groups to help us avoid perpetuating biases and oversights in science and IT research.
    Context And Mission
  • REPSOL, S.A. is in the process of building a pyrolysis chemical reactor at an industrial scale on behalf of the EU Granted Project Plastic2Olefins. The aim of the Plastics2Olefins project is to demonstrate a novel hightemperature pyrolysis process at an industrial scale for recycling unsorted heterogeneous plastic wastes. The main product will be a gas stream (syngas) rich in light olefins: ethylene, propylene, butadiene and BTX As almost all plastic is derived from light olefins, a specific objective of the project is to find the operating conditions that yield a syngas composition maximising olefins.
  • The present project aims to provide a further understanding of the physicochemical conditions and flow dynamics taking place in the reactors and evaluate the influence of the process conditions on the quality of the product. For this project, a close interaction between Repsol, S.A. and BSC is expected. BSC will develop a reactor model that will be validated with real information from the operation of the facilities provided by Repsol, S.A. The reactor model will mainly address the influence of environmental variables (humidity, temperature, concentration, screw velocity rotation, etc.) on the pyrolysis process. A revision of the numerical model will also be evaluated in collaboration with Repsol, S.A.
    Key Duties
  • To develop a numerical method to couple particle and flow+heat transfer numerical methods
  • To ensure the coupling is efficient for parallel and heterogeneous supercomputers
  • To develop validation tests to be included in the Alya suites (unity tests and benchmark tests)
  • To document the implementations
  • To report all the advances to Repsol scientific contact
