It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, was a founding and hosting member of the former European HPC infrastructure PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe), and is now hosting entity for EuroHPC JU, the Joint Undertaking that leads largescale investments and HPC provision in Europe. The mission of BSC is to research, develop and manage information technologies in order to facilitate scientific progress. BSC combines HPC service provision and R&D into both computer and computational science (life, earth and engineering sciences) under one roof, and currently has over 900 staff from 55 countries.

    Context And Mission
  • The Climate Services (CS) Team within the Earth System Services Group (ESS) is seeking a highly motivated researcher or research engineer to develop computationallyefficient climate diagnostics for climate indicators required by a number of climate adaptation use cases in a timely manner.

Key Duties

  • Implement useroriented climate diagnostics with computationallyefficient algorithms in python, R or a similar language
  • Identify climate diagnostic requirements from a selected number of use cases and include them in the above mentioned algorithms
  • Interact with scientists and engineers in the group, department, and other institutions
  • Disseminate the research output in peerreviewed scientific papers and international conferences and the code generated in open access outlet

Requirements:


  • Education
  • BSc and MSc in Applied Mathematics, Physics, Computing Engineering (or equivalent)
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
  • Proficiency in scientific programming in a suitable language (e.g., R, Python)
  • Ability to abstract climate diagnostic requirements into mathematical concepts
  • Ability to work in a professional environment within a transdisciplinary and international team
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
  • Knowledge about workflow and data management, parallel computing and statistical analyses will be valued
  • Basic knowledge about climate variability and change
  • Competences
  • Problemsolving, proactive, resultoriented work attitude
  • Excellent communication skills

Conditions

  • The position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department
  • We offer a fulltime contract (37.5h/week), a good working environment, a highly stimulating environment with stateoftheart infrastructure, flexible working hours, extensive training plan, restaurant tickets, private health insurance, support to the relocation procedures
  • Duration: Openended contract due to technical and scientific activities linked to the project and budget duration
  • Holidays: 23 paid vacation days plus 24th and 31st of December per our collective agreement
  • Starting date: As soon as possible
