It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, was a founding and hosting member of the former European HPC infrastructure PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe), and is now hosting entity for EuroHPC JU, the Joint Undertaking that leads largescale investments and HPC provision in Europe. The mission of BSC is to research, develop and manage information technologies in order to facilitate scientific progress. BSC combines HPC service provision and R&D into both computer and computational science (life, earth and engineering sciences) under one roof, and currently has over 900 staff from 55 countries.

    Context And Mission
  • Within the Earth Sciences Department of Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC-ES), led by Prof Francisco Doblas-Reyes, the Climate Variability and Change group aims at developing climate modelling and prediction capabilities for time scales ranging from a few weeks to a centuries into the future at global scales. This objective relies on expanding our understanding of the climate processes responsible for climate variability and change through a deep analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of stateoftheart climate models in comparison with the most uptodate observational datasets, and on exploiting these detailed analyses to refine the representation of the relevant climate processes and increasing our understanding.
    Key Duties
  • Coordinate and supervise the group scientific activities
  • Leading its scientific strategy and production
  • Representing the group in international panels and international scientific meetings
  • Nourishing the group with innovative lines
  • Obtain, with the support of the group, competitive funding and computing time resources at both national and international levels to sustain the research activities of the group

Requirements:


  • Education
  • PhD in physical oceanography, atmospheric physics, fluid dynamics, applied mathematics or in a related discipline
  • At least 5 years of postdoctoral experience
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
  • Proven ability to prepare research proposals for either funding or computing resources
  • Experience as principal investigator of national or international projects
  • Experience in mentoring / advising postdoctoral researchers and/or PhD students
  • Knowledge in climate, oceanography or atmospheric sciences
  • Experience in ocean/atmosphere modeling or environmental modeling
  • Proven ability for independent and innovative thinking
  • Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
  • Knowledge of version control systems (git)
  • Experience in handling large databases
  • Experience in the use of climate models
  • Be available for a certain amount of traveling during the year, mostly at the European level.
  • Competences
  • Fluency in spoken and written English, while fluency in other European languages will be also valued
  • Highly collaborative spirit; ability to work as part of a large, stronglycoordinated team and to share both knowledge and tools
  • Proven ability for independent and innovative thinking

Conditions

  • The position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department
  • We offer a fulltime contract (37.5h/week), a good working environment, a highly stimulating environment with stateoftheart infrastructure, flexible working hours, extensive training plan, restaurant tickets, private health insurance, support to the relocation procedures
  • Duration: Openended contract due to technical and scientific activities linked to the project and budget duration
  • Holidays: 23 paid vacation days plus 24th and 31st of December per our collective agreement
  • Starting date: February
