What reality are you creating for yourself?

What reality are you creating for yourself?

59dc640d.jpg

What does reality really mean? Is my reality same than yours? Could it be different? The answer is YES. Maybe some of you would ask me, why do you think so? The reason was an incredible and inspirational TED Talks's video I recently watched, where Isaac Lidsky talks about how everyone of us "create" our reality and why could not be the same depending on your feelings, your attitude, your fears or your experience. I really recommend you to watch this video (you can do it clickling on Isaac Lidsky's picture).

"Reality isn't something you perceive; it's something you create in your mind."

Reality is not what you see, is a perspective, a complex mental construction of your own making. You create your own reality, and you believe it. As Isaac explains, when he became blind, he knew that situation would ruin his life, it would be the end of his achievement, he would live sad and likely alone. At least that was a fiction born of his fears, but he believed it. It was a lie, but also it was his reality. Fortunatelly he confronted his fears and his life changed drastically. He got married with Dorothy and had 4 children.

Seeing is believing, sight is truth?

What we see is not universal truth, it is not objective reality. What we see is a unique personal virtual reality. "Sight is an illusion: 1/3 part of it is made of our eye's information and 2/3 of processing resources." To create the experience of sight, your brain represents your conceptual understanding of the world, your knowledge, your memories, opinions, emotions, mental attention, and it links it to your sight.

What you see impacts how you feel, and the way you feel can literally changes what you see. What you see is a complex mental construction of your own making. You create your own reality, and you believe it.

Your fear disturbs your reality

42d126ee.jpg"Fear replaces the unknown with the awful." Imagine fear as a kaleidoscope. Fear can change the way you see what is all around you, sending messages to your brain that what is in front of you is a threat or not. Fear passes off what you threat for what you know, offers of the worst replacing the ambiguous and substitutes asumptions for reason. Fear lets you think something is impossible just to not confront it, fear is an alert telling your brain you are in danger (when maybe you are not).

As someone recently asked me: what definition do you choose for fear? False Evidence Appearing Real... or Face Everything And Rise? Fear has two different meanings, depending on how powerful is that feeling. What is your choice?

(Want to know what kind of fears are there? Read "Have no fear, have a beer".)

Hellen Keller

Can we change our reality?

Isaac Lidsky recommends us to identify our own reality in order to decide to change it or not. "Hold yourself accountable for every moment, every thought, every detail. See beyond your fears, recognize your asumptions, harvest your internal strenghts, silence your internal critics, correct your misconceptions about luck and success, accept you strengths and your weeknesses and understand the difference."

"Your fears, your critics, your heroes, your villains, they are your excuses, rationalizations, shortcuts, justifications, your surrender. They are fictions you perceive as reality. YOU are the creator of your reality."

What do you fear? What lies do you tell yourself? How do you embellence your truths and write your own fictions? What reality are you creating for yourself?

Great post Miguel L\u00f3pez de la Oliva. A topic close to my heart. From my perspective, we are sensory beings and as such we form meaning from our experiences. It is our meaning, therefore our reality. The poet Alfred North Whitehead said: "Nature gets credit which in truth should be reserved for ourselves, the rose for its scent, the nightingale for his song, and the sun for its radiance. The poets are entirely mistaken. They should address their lyrics to themselves and should turn them into odes of self-congratulations on the excellence of the human mind. Nature is a dull affair, soundless, scentless, colorless, merely the hurrying of material, endlessly, meaninglessly." This process of how we form our "reality" is what needs to be clearly understood. Fear, for example, doesn't form our reality, it's our response to fear that does that. Everything we sense is information. It is what we choose to do with that information that forms our reality. You're right, we are the creator of our reality. But because we are individuals who depend on community to survive, our challenge is to form that reality which is connected or attached to a common reality. Awareness is the key. If you're "smart" about it, you can "have your cake and eat it too". You can be the individual you want when you find the community in which to express that individuality.

It's true, you have to recognize it. Sometimes it's hard to admit because it makes a person feel weak or that others will view them as weak if they try to ignore it. Fears just don't go away on their own :)

thanks Lisa \ud83d\udc1d Gallagher! I really appreciate your comment about alternative treatments to connect our brain to our body. Now I must read more about it. First step to fight against fear: recognize it. ;)

Thanks for tagging me Donna Luisa! Miguel L\u00f3pez de la Oliva, this was an excellent topic. I watched this video before and he just makes so much sense. I think it's great to recognize what may be holding you back or your fears (especially if they are extreme) earlier in life hence, better chance at over-coming them in the short term. I'm at an age where I finally had to seek help for some extreme stuff that my brain programmed and stored wrong. I'm currently working hard with my therapist. My sessions began with CBT (Cognitive behavioral therapy) and progressed to EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing). I will have my 3 session this week. What is EMDR [ condensed]- "The EMDR therapy uses bilateral stimulation, right/left eye movement, or tactile stimulation, which repeatedly activates the opposite sides of the brain, releasing emotional experiences that are "trapped" in the nervous system. This assists the neurophysiological system, the basis of the mind/body connection, to free itself of blockages and reconnect itself." http://www.psychotherapist.net/emdr-faq.html This is one of the few newer therapies recognized and insurance will pay for. I don't want others to view me as a person with fears and anxiety who is unable to function, my hope is they see me as a person whose had a set back in life that caught up with her and she's taking the right steps to become more functional than she could have imagined. We all have our baggage but the brain is a versatile organ that is able to use other parts of the brain for processing information we once perceived as horrible.
