How to Achieve the "Flow State"

How to Achieve the "Flow State"

5ecfe17c.jpg

This content is inspired by this article from Marta 🐝 García Quijada

The State of Flow

The state of flow, or being in the zone, is a state of peak performance.

The flow state has been described by the world’s greatest thinkers as the most productive and creative state of mind in which to work. In addition, positive psychologists–most notably Dr. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, Ph.D.–argue that achieving the flow state on a regular basis is a key component of happiness. That is, by learning how to enter the state of flow you can increase your productivity, be more creative, and be happier, all at the same time.

When you're inspired it all comes out alone!

Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi is a Positive psychologist. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi has contributed pioneering work to our understanding of happiness, creativity, human fulfillment and the notion of "flow" -- a state of heightened focus and immersion in activities such as art, play and work.

How can you get into the state of flow at work?

1.- Assigning tasks according to skill set.

The more a challenge requires us to deploy our best skills, the more likely we will become absorbed in flow. When we’re not challenged, our performance suffers and we become disengaged.

2.- Finding work we love.

Doing what we’re passionate about is one sign of great work. In good work we align what we’re best at with what engages us, and also what fits our sense of meaning and purpose. Good work puts us in a frame of mind where flow arise spontaneously.

3.- Through fully absorbed focus.

The stronger the concentration we bring to a task, the more likely we are to drop into flow while doing it. The better our ability to pay attention to what we choose and ignore distractions, the stronger our concentration.

Get into the Flow State

Sports and physical activity (Andrew 🐝 Goldman) are not the only way to get into the Flow State. Artists experience it when swept away in an inspired creative frenzy. Writers experience it when they get caught up in the story and the words seem to pour effortlessly onto the page.

Flow can also occur when workers are engaged in tasks where they are able to focus entirely on the project at hand. For example, a writer might experience this while working on a novel (isn't it Andrew 🐝 Goldman?) or a graphic designer might achieve flow while working on a website illustration (isn´t it Noël De Castro Nacho 🐝 López Llandres?).

Some of us experience it while listening to music, watching a beautiful sunset (isn't it Matt 🐝 Sweetwood Noël De Castro ?), brain-storming while resting in bed before sleeping ( this is my case LOL), spontaneous meetings where we get together for brainstorming ( isn't it Alberto Anaya Arcas Raul Duque Montánez?) , working in the garden, removing snow (isn't it Paul "Pablo" Croubalian?), holding a deep and meaningful conversation with a friend or other moments. These are moments in which your mind becomes entirely absorbed in the activity. You forget yourself and your actions. Time seems to slow down and you experience heightened perceptions.

Great post Javier 🐝 beBee In the kitchen we call this "Being in the Zone", and it's actually very difficult to perform under pressure at the peak of service if you're NOT. LOL Same with sports, "Being in the Zone", it equals peak performance and enjoyment

Javier 🐝 beBee Thanks for sharing. Like you I experience flow when doing something I love and do well -I get lost in the work and hear very little from the outside -sometimes it is just something I love -even though I don't do it particularly well -like woodcarving, or songwriting -I get immersed in the learning and love the progress I make -. Sometimes it is something I don't particularly love but do very well -like writing training materials -when I get done procrastinating (because I "say" I don't doing it -I focus and it begins to go well -the reinforcing cycle. Flow never happens when I disagree with or dislike (really dislike) the activity though and no amount of let's just get this done focus will conjure it forth. Thanks again

Flow state is a cool term- sort of like Buddhism minus the religious aspect.

I am fully in my flow state when I'm out taking photos! I plan to do a travel/photo buzz before the week ends. How boring we'd all be if we all had the same focus. Writing helps too.

Thanks for highlighting this pivotal concept Javier 🐝 beBee We have studied what you have referred to as the ‘flow state’ for several years. On review of our own case studies as well as the prevailing research, we have defined the ‘5 core elements’ which contribute to a mind state promoting enhanced wellness and productivity (in effect, your 'flow state'). These core elements are: 1) Meaning and purpose; 2) Self-esteem/self-efficacy; 3) Gratification – task engagement gratification, task mastery gratification, reward; 4) Achievement – anticipated achievement or achievement experienced which was greater than anticipated; 5) Value contribution – to self and to the extended environment. The converse of the core elements or your state of flow is a state of hopeless-helplessness – akin to ‘what’s the use of trying, I never experience success or gratification’. Our whole program is directed at promoting the 5 core elements which has shown to enhance wellness, performance and leadership as well as personal gratification. Arriving at the core elements requires a detailed de-brief of the individual to establish the appropriate activity for engagement – a comprehensive personal mission statement, among other things.

This buzz is very poignant for me because the book "Flow" absolutely changed my life. I found a meaning in which invigorated my mind, heart and will. Prior reading this book I was tired of existence, cynical of people, exhausted by bullshit, devoid of meaning and empty of desire. The transformation that Mihaly's book provided me is the very reason I am here at beBee and now participate in my own learning pathways online - once I understood what flow was and the relationship with capability and challenge, it absolutely changed my life - and my life changed at the end of my 30's. Ironically my brother had later attended a complexity conference in Boston and the person sitting next to him was Dr. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. As my brother listened to the speakers, I believe one speaker called Francis Fukuyama happened to say something that hit a nerve with Mihaly's own life experiences growing up in Soviet occupied Hungary. I can't remember what my brother said Fukuyama said which got Mihaly upset, but Mihaly simply got up and walked out into the hallway. My brother seeing him visibly not happy followed him into the hallway. It is at this point that my brother mentioned to him the impact his book "Flow" had on me. He explained my life before and after reading this book and how it was transformational, that within it I found my compass and liberated meaning. When Mihaly heard my story in that hallway, my brother said he teared up and he was absolutely surprised that his book could have this kind of effect. In contrast to what Fukuyama had said on stage, Mihaly was now focused on my own transformation as a person.

The flow state seems to be the Western equivalent of the oriental concept of mindfulness. I find that scientific work can be very flow-y too, if you know what you are doing :-)

Javier, kudos on another awesome blogging buzz. What really strikes a chord with me is point 2: Finding work we love. I think this is the engine that drives the "flow state" -- at least for me. This is because when we find work we love, our motivation and performance peaks and remains optimal levels. When we find work we love it's not difficult to put in long hours or wake up early because motivation and adrenaline kick in. Most people who find work they love would do it whether they were paid or not (although the former is certainly preferred to the latter). Thus, I think we can all take your words of wisdom to heart in order to improve and optimize the "flow state" in our own lives according to what's resonates most powerfully with each of us. Thanks again, Javier, for BEEing so positive and inspirational, from which we can all learn a valuable lesson in-and-of itself. Vamos!!! cc John White, MBA
