Build your house with the stones they hurled at you

Once we know what we really want, the next to do is make a list of all the obstacles which impedes or disturbs us from obtaining our goals: speaking English with ease, confidence and fluency.

According to my students this list is long, but also very repetitive, it is to say we all have similar obstacles. Here is a standard list where you can mark your own.

• Spanish/English is a thorn in my side

  

• It’s an impossible challenge
• It’s long overdue
• I’ll never be able to speak Spanish/English
• My pronunciation is awful
• When I speak no one seems to understand me
• I don’t think I’m capable of doing it
• I’m better with numbers
• I’m hopeless at languages
• I get blocked
• I know all the rules but when an important moment arises I go blank.
• I never progress
• It is very difficult
• It’s impossible
• I don’t have any time to study
• I can’t afford it
• It is too expensive
• The boss/ My family don’t make it easy for me
• It isn’t the right time
• It’s too late for me
• I’m too scared
• I need to prepare myself better
• I’m unlucky in these things
• I’m useless in languages
• I get too embarrassed
• I have a fear of ridicule
• It’s a waste of time

Great, now let’s head to the conclusion: all that has been marked as obstacles on the list aren’t impeding us in reality, it is just a sensation we feel of why we can’t reach our goal, and these sensations almost always deceive and are never a reflection of what is reality.

Many of them are other people’s beliefs where they don’t have the basics or a very mistaken one, but they condition you and stop you from achieving what you dreamt of.

Would you allow your old teacher, your neighbour, your brother in-law or your father stop you from achieving what you want? Would you really refrain yourself in life because of that one comment that was once made years ago in that moment…..?

I’m sorry to disappoint you but these people do not remember the comment they said or even how they said it, because even if it is difficult to believe, they were trying to motivate you.

As a professional I know this form of motivation is actually more harmful than beneficial, but your father, friend, etc…. didn’t know better, they were only trying to help you become the best.

Don’t go round in circles, don’t waste time thinking on what is possible and what isn’t, if you are worth it or not, JUST ACT.

Let things change in your life.

To conclude:

It is important to know what impedes us from fulfilling our dreams, once you have identified this enemy it is easy to face it and change our attitude towards this process. If we change our attitude, we will obtain our goals in less time and more efficiently.

Grab the same list and replace the obstacles with actions that can help you achieve this effectively or even by eliminating them!
