The role

The Financial Times is looking for a News Assistant for its Madrid bureau to support its coverage of Spain and Portugal.

This is a multi-faceted role: one part entails research, reporting and fact-checking to assist the FT correspondent's work on news and features about the Iberian peninsula; the other comprises administrative duties that keep the bureau running smoothly.

This position is open to either full-time or part-time arrangements.

Key responsibilities

  • Assist the correspondent with news gathering. This includes monitoring news on TV and online; research and factchecking; identifying potential interviewees and doing initial outreach; and assisting with travel planning and logistics.
  • Ensure smooth functioning of the bureau. This requires tasks such as maintaining office accounts, paying bills, communicating with service providers and official agencies. It also entails liaising with the managing editor's office in London on costs, expenses and any issues pertaining to operations of the office.

How we work
Our hybrid setup means staff are expected to come into the office three days a week (full-time roles).

If you take on the position in a part-time capacity, we are flexible on the three days a week expectation.

Our commitment to diversity and inclusion in the workplace
The FT is committed to providing an inclusive working environment for all.

We are an equal opportunities employer who seeks to recruit and appoint the best talent regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, socio-economic background, religion and/or belief.

We believe that a supportive workplace is one where employees feel they can be themselves at work and have the flexibility they need to meet their personal needs.
