Position Overview


We are currently looking for a confident and experienced Secondary Substitute Science Teacher and Lab Coordinator to join our team in the Secondary School.

Your duties will include substituting classrooms by assigning homework, managing classroom activities, and compiling reports.

In addition, as the Science Laboratory Coordinator you will be responsible for coordinating activities in the Science labs; procuring materials, services and facilities necessary for science instruction; and doing related work as required.


Work requires knowledge of science instruction, as well as excellent communication and administrative skills to plan lab activities, maintain current materials, plan coverage, problem solve and coordinate the day-to-day operations of the Science labs.

Working conditions include potential exposure to body fluids, disease organisms and hazardous materials.

Science Substitute Teacher

  • Adhering to the curriculum and lesson plans assigned by the regular teacher.
  • Following procedures and achieving lesson goals.
  • Assigning and explaining homework.
  • Overseeing students outside of the classroom, including duties in the hallways, outdoor play areas and cafeteria.
  • Invigilation of scheduled exams as needed (semester exams, final exams, mock exams, etc.
  • Complying with all school regulations and policies at all times.
  • Taking attendance and documenting daily notes.
  • Ensuring the classroom and work stations are kept clean and orderly.
  • Overseeing the normal classroom rhythms and activities.
  • Compiling a report for the teacher for when they return.
  • Covering duties and electives.
Science Lab Coordinator

  • Determines specifications of needed materials in consultation with Science Teachers and Lab Teacher Assistant; recommends equipment and materials for purchase; prepares purchase orders for instructional materials, supplies and equipment, in conjunction with the SAL.
  • Assigns and directs the work of Science Department aides and student assistants; supervises laboratory and lecture demonstration preparations and the cleaning and maintenance of equipment and facilities following labs; assigns special tasks to Instructional Specialists as required by department needs.
  • Supervises the use, storage and disposal of flammable, poisonous, corrosive or other hazardous materials; orients and informs staff of the nature of hazardous materials, the policies and regulations governing their use and the use of safety equipment; implements safety procedures; prepares revises and implements the chemical hygiene plan and emergency response plan.
  • Designs and implements maintenance schedules for rooms and the fume hood; supervises the maintenance of instructional items and facilities.
  • Regular check in and cleaning of probes, glassware, scales, microscopes, etc.).
  • Coordinates the inventory of equipment and chemicals; monitors the condition and status of dated or unstable chemicals; prepares and maintains material safety data sheets.
  • Along with the lab assistant, do endofday and endofweek walkthroughs of the labs for safety checks.

School-Wide Qualifications and Attributes

  • A Bachelor's degree in a science discipline is required with teaching credentials
  • Three years of recent work experience in a similar role
  • Proven experience in managing a science teaching laboratory and knowledge of applicable safet
