Descripción

Created in 2005 by the Generalitat de Catalunya (Government of Catalonia) and the University of Barcelona, IRB Barcelona is a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence—a seal that was awarded in 2011.

The institute is devoted to conducting research of excellence in biomedicine and to transferring results to clinical practice, thus improving people's quality of life, while simultaneously promoting the training of outstanding researchers, technology transfer, and public communication of science.

Its 28 laboratories and seven core facilities address basic questions in biology and are orientated to diseases such as cancer, metastasis, Alzheimer's, diabetes, and rare conditions.

IRB Barcelona is an international centre that hosts 400 members and 35 nationalities. It is located in the Barcelona Science Park.

IRB Barcelona forms part of the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST) and the "Xarxa de Centres de Recerca de Catalunya" (CERCA).

Under the INVESTIGO program, IRB Barcelona is seeking a
Technical Officer / Research Engineer to conduct R&D and engineering activities on custom and commercial advanced optical microscope systems.

DUTIES:

The _Advanced Digital Microscopy (ADM) Core facility _is a research support unit that facilitates Bioimaging training, access and technological/scientific support for life scientists with state-of-the-art advanced optical microscopy systems and bioimage analysis.

Part of the technology portfolio of ADM is based on custom development of laser-based microscopy systems, with the aims to i) anticipate on commercialization of new technologies, ii) adapt instruments to the needs of scientists and specificity of biological samples, iii) develop new imaging methods and solutions, iv) maintain/retrofit essential imaging technologies to avoid instrument obsolescence and commercial dependency.

ADM is a leading bioimaging platform in Spain, involved in European infrastructure projects such as Eurobioimaging, and co-founder of network initiatives such as NEUBIAS or REMOA.

  • Control/integrate hardware and acquisition software to maintain and further develop existing systems, including several commercial instruments (widefield fluorescence, spinning disk, TIRF, macroscope) and custom system (lightsheet microscopy, laser nanosurgery),
  • Develop new acquisition/optical methods in tissue imaging (fluorescence, labelfree, live or fixed/cleared tissues),
  • Elaborate engineering activities in electronics, mechanics, optoelectronics, (micro)fluidics, etc
  • Help users of aforementioned systems to perform imaging.
