What is the Role?


As Head of International Markets be responsible for managing a team of circa 15 research managers, analysts and senior analysts that conduct research into relevant power markets across North America, Europe and Asia Pacific, with a focus on understanding the economics of renewable assets.


Reporting into the Director of Energy Economics, you will oversee the day to day management of the international market team, guide their research and analysis, ensure prioritisation of tasks and that the team is operating effectively to deliver objectives.


You will be responsible for managing the development of the SSE view of long-term wholesale power and asset capture prices and market related revenues / costs for all relevant markets outside of GB and Ireland in which SSE is now active, or is considering as part of its Renewables Business Unit growth.

These outputs will be used to guide commercial evaluation of existing renewable generation assets, potential investments and divestments, and support assessment of Renewables Business Unit strategy.

You will become the main point of contact for the Exec, BD and bid teams for International market analysis.

Based in UK / Spain or Rotterdam, you will represent SSE at industry events, will engage with market participants, regulators and industry bodies, to influence the thinking of peers in bodies affecting the market, e.g.

industry forums.


Your key accountabilities will include;-

  • Managing the process for creating and updating International market insight reports, covering market fundamentals, market design, policy support mechanisms and any market specific factors that are relevant for the BU when assessing an opportunity or market attractiveness. Close working with the strategy team to share views and contribute to strategic analysis.
  • Managing the team of research managers/analysts/senior analysts to deliver a high level of service and deep support for M&A activity, as well as offshore wind seabed / subsidy auctions across Europe. This includes taking the lead on many related workstreams for numerous simultaneous projects.
  • This will involve the provision of reports and presentations (up to MD and Group Exec level) informing the SSE Group Executive team's thinking and decision making on international markets, including entry, effort prioritisation and investment appraisals. The role holder will be responsible for recommending price curves and bespoke analysis related to the commercial opportunities and risks that projects may be exposed to (market, subsidy design, cPPA, etc.).
  • Manging the relationship with third party providers of market reports and price curves. Regular meetings and communication of thirdparty outlooks within the business. Making the case to the Director of Energy Economics and the business units for procurement of price curves and subscription services, where the resultant price curves and advice are key drivers for SSE view and valuations worth £several Bn's. Reviews forecasts of relevant power markets provided by third parties, providing comment on how and why thirdparty forecasts differ from SSE's internal forecasts and engaging with third party providers to gain insight and exchange views.
  • Develops and Manages relationships with internal stakeholders to build on Energy Economics crucial role at the heart of SSE's international growth. Maintaining independence and integrity, with a high level of service that enables the business to make well informed decisions.
  • Responsibility a team of over 14 people, based in multiple continents. Responsible for the development of senior managers and more junior team members within the Energy Economics International team, including the development of an internship scheme, graduate placements etc. Building an inclusive environment where people are proud to work at SSE.

What do I need?
To be considered we would love you to have;

  • Experience in wholesale energy market analysis
  • Skill in external stakeholder management with an ability to represent SSE in the industry.
  • Detailed Knowledge of Electricity Market Economics and Policy Mechanisms.
  • Economic and Commercial modelling experience and understanding.
  • Detailed Knowledge of power market modelling.
