Hyperion Materials & Technologies is looking for a


R&D Engineer Materials Scientist
The location of this position is in the Hyperion M&T site in Martorelles, Barcelona.


Job Summary


The R&D Engineer - Materials Scientist will be responsible for developing new cemented carbide / cermet materials by using laboratory equipment and modelling tools, like Thermo-Calc.

Development of new materials will also require development of new processes, such as sintering cycles and post-treatments.

The materials' development engineer will work cross-functionally with operations, sales, and product management to develop and successfully industrialize new grades to customer specifications and within project time commitments.


Main responsibilities for this position will include:

  • Developing novel grades of cemented carbide and cermet from laboratory research to industrial scale.
  • Developing new processes for cemented carbide manufacturing.
  • Characterizing and analyzing material properties and connecting those properties with customer demands.
  • Leading teams of R&D Engineers as a Project Manager.
  • Supporting the industrialization process by working closely with engineering and operations teams.
  • Collaborating with universities and other external research centers.
  • Ensuring Quality and Health-SafetyEnvironmental procedures are followed.

Ideal Employee Profile:


  • Possess an MSc, preferably a PhD, in a relevant Science or Engineering discipline.
  • Have at least three years of relevant industrial experience in materials science or powder metallurgy, preferably in cemented carbide.
  • Track record in successfully developing and bringing to the market new materials.
  • Have experience on optical and scanning electron microscopies, EBSD, and be familiar with mechanical, thermal and corrosion testing techniques.
  • Possess good interpersonal and communication skills with experience of working in and/or leading multidisciplinary and multicultural teams.
  • Have a good command of oral and written English.
  • Have the ability to travel occasionally.
