    About BSC
  • The Barcelona Supercomputing Center
  • Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain. It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, was a founding and hosting member of the former European HPC infrastructure PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe), and is now hosting entity for EuroHPC JU, the Joint Undertaking that leads largescale investments and HPC provision in Europe. The mission of BSC is to research, develop and manage information technologies in order to facilitate scientific progress. BSC combines HPC service provision and R&D into both computer and computational science (life, earth and engineering sciences) under one roof, and currently has over 900 staff from 55 countries.

    Context And Mission
  • The Earth Sciences Department of the BSC (BSC-ES) aims to conduct research into modelling and to understand the behaviour of the Earth's system. BSC-ES focuses on atmospheric emissions, air quality, mineral dust, climate modelling and prediction, global health resilience, and Earth system services for end users.
  • Within the BSC-ES, the Atmospheric Composition (AC) Group develops a modelling capability to combine atmospheric dynamical and chemical processes relevant at a wide range of spatial scales and investigates their impacts on weather, air quality, climate, health and ecosystems. A core activity of the group is dust modelling and forecasting, and as a result of its excellence, the BSC-ES hosts the WMO Sand and Dust Storm Warning Advisory and Assessment System for North Africa, the Middle East and Europe, and an AXA Chair on Sand and Dust Storms. The group is also highly active in the EC Framework Programs and has collaborated with the administrations on competitive projects and contracts.
  • In collaboration with ocean scientists, one of the lines of research of the AC group involves investigating the effect of the atmospheric deposition of aerosols in the ocean biogeochemical cycles. In this area, the group leads at present the Spanish national project BIOTA (Ocean BIOgeochemistry response To refined Atmospheric iron inputs in present and future climate), focusing on the atmospheric iron cycle, its refinement in our current models and the subsequent impact on ocean productivity and carbon export. The MSc intern will work closely with BIOTA researchers and other Department members to investigate, based on measurements and models, the impact of strong dust deposition events on the concentration of particles in the deep ocean.
    Key Duties
  • Literature review to understand the link between aerosols deposition in the ocean and ocean biogeochemical responses.
  • Compilation of available observational data from marine autonomous platforms, which measure the concentration of particles in the Mediterranean Sea.
  • Identification of highconcentration particles anomalous events in the aforementioned data series.
  • Analyse the potential link between previously identified events and investigate their relationship with mineral dust deposition over the Mediterranean, as predicted by stateoftheart models.
  • Development of the necessary codes, analysis and reports to perform and present the student's work.
  • Interaction with scientists from the Atmospheric Composition and the Climate Variability and Change teams.

Requirements:

  • Education
  • A BSc Degree in physics, chemistry, biology, environmental sciences, engineering or similar.
  • Currently enrolled in an MSc Degree on environmental engineering or similar.
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
  • Experience in data analysis, report writing and communication of results.
  • Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
  • Experience in similar fields will be valued.
  • Competences
  • Experience in programming, e.g. in R, python, Matlab, etc. will be valued.
  • Fluent in English, both written and spoken.

Conditions

  • The position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department
  • We offer a fulltime contract (37.5h/week), a good working environment, a highly stimulating environment with stateoftheart infrastructure, flexible working hours, extensive training plan, restaurant tickets, private health insurance, support to the relocation procedures
  • Duration: Openended contract due to technical and scientific activities linked to the project and budget duration
  • Holidays: 23 paid vacation days plus 24th and 31st of December per our collective agreement
  • Starting date: 01/06/2024
