It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, was a founding and hosting member of the former European HPC infrastructure PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe), and is now hosting entity for EuroHPC JU, the Joint Undertaking that leads largescale investments and HPC provision in Europe. The mission of BSC is to research, develop and manage information technologies in order to facilitate scientific progress. BSC combines HPC service provision and R&D into both computer and computational science (life, earth and engineering sciences) under one roof, and currently has over 900 staff from 55 countries.

    Context And Mission
  • CVC is looking for a senior scientist to colead all the group activities.
  • The group workforce combines a large variety of expertise in climate processes from the atmosphere down to the deep ocean and from tropical to polar latitudes, together with expertise in climate modelling and data analysis. The group relies on the close collaboration with tens of engineers and technicians to support the use of the computer infrastructure in place, improve the computational performance of the climate model, and develop new tools required by the scientific team.
    Key Duties
  • Oversee and coordinate the research and development activities of the CVC group
  • Develop and implement a strategic vision for the group
  • Coordinate the model development, experimental production and scientific evaluation of the different versions of IFS-NEMO
  • Prepare and submit supercomputing access proposals to support the production of the high resolution IFS-NEMO simulations
  • Coordinate the BSC contributions to several project deliverables
  • Supervise the work of group members, both researchers and research engineers
  • Actively seek new funding opportunities, both national and international, to consolidate and extend the core research activities of the group, including the necessary support from the Computational Earth Sciences group
  • Oversee and plan the funding distribution of the group's resources
  • Participate with a leading role in different European research projects

Requirements:


  • Education
  • PhD in climate sciences, applied mathematics, engineering, fluid dynamics or a related discipline
  • At least 5 years of postdoctoral experience
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
  • Solid experience participating with a leading role in different research proposals
  • Demonstrated experience in high resolution modelling and climate prediction
  • A solid publication record, both as lead and senior author
  • Experience supervising the work of junior researchers
  • Proven ability for independent and innovative thinking
  • Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
  • Knowledge of version control systems (git)
  • Active participation in key international scientific panels (e.g., from WCRP)
  • Demonstrated capacity to write and lead the preparation of research and computing proposals
  • Competences
  • Fluency in spoken and written English, while fluency in other European languages will be also valued
  • Highly collaborative spirit; ability to work as part of a large, stronglycoordinated team and to share both knowledge and tools

Conditions

  • The position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department
  • We offer a fulltime contract (37.5h/week), a good working environment, a highly stimulating environment with stateoftheart infrastructure, flexible working hours, extensive training plan, restaurant tickets, private health insurance, support to the relocation procedures
  • Duration: Openended contract due to technical and scientific activities linked to the project and budget duration
  • Holidays: 23 paid vacation days plus 24th and 31st of December per our collective agreement
  • Starting date: February
