  • Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain. It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, was a founding and hosting member of the former European HPC infrastructure PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe), and is now hosting entity for EuroHPC JU, the Joint Undertaking that leads largescale investments and HPC provision in Europe. The mission of BSC is to research, develop and manage information technologies in order to facilitate scientific progress.     Context And Mission
  • The position offered is funded by the Destination Earth contract CATs and by the Horizon Europe project EERIE, and involves contributing to the development of the new digital twin based on NEMO and IFS, its scientific validation, and all the scientific activities around it to be performed within EERIE, including leading a deliverable and supervising the work of other group members.
    Key Duties
  • Contribute to the development of the new very high resolution configuration with NEMO4.2 and IFS, and its scientific validation
  • Running some of the production experiments with this new model configuration
  • Contribute to project deliverables
  • Analyse how the increase of the resolution impacts the representation of future ocean changes and their impacts over land
  • Lead the scientific activities and reporting of the national project STREAM
  • Submitting and executing supercomputing access proposals to guarantee the feasibility of the high resolution simulations

Requirements:


  • Education
  • PhD in atmospheric science, applied mathematics, engineering, fluid dynamics or in a related discipline
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
  • Postdoctoral experience will be valued
Proven ability to prepare and submit manuscripts to peer-review journals

  • A demonstrated ability to develop experimental set ups that address specific climate modeling problems
  • Experience in ocean/atmosphere modelling (or environmental modelling) and in handling climate model output
  • Programming skills: scripting (e.g. bash, python), data analysis and visualization software (e.g. CDO, NCO, R, Python, NCL)
  • Experience in handling large datasets, and a minimum knowledge of NetCDF encoding
  • Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
  • Interest and capacity in participating in the writing and, when possible, leading the preparation of research and computing proposals
  • Interest in tutoring and/or advising master and PhD students
  • Competences
  • Fluency in spoken and written English, while fluency in other European languages will be also valued
  • Highly collaborative spirit and ability to work as part of a large, stronglycoordinated team and to continuously share both knowledge and tools

Conditions

  • The position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department
  • We offer a fulltime contract (37.5h/week), a good working environment, a highly stimulating environment with stateoftheart infrastructure, flexible working hours, extensive training plan, restaurant tickets, private health insurance, support to the relocation procedures
  • Duration: Openended contract due to technical and scientific activities linked to the project and budget duration
  • Holidays: 23 paid vacation days plus 24th and 31st of December per our collective agreement
  • Starting date: 01/08/2023
