As a Distributed Systems Engineer at Upbound, you'll primarily work on designing, developing and supporting features in the Crossplane open source project.


You will join the Control Planes team as a Staff Distributed Systems Engineer where you will contribute to building out Crossplane in support of Upbound's open source projects and products.

You will also contribute to ensuring a healthy Crossplane community through PR reviews, issue triage and sharing your knowledge in the community Slack workspace.

In this role, you will be expected to...

  • Be a contributor and reviewer to the open source Crossplane project, as well as Upbound's open source projects.
  • Take ownership and lead the development and adoption of features in high demand by Upbound's customers and the Crossplane community.
  • Communicate and collaborate on your plans through thoughtful and thorough design documents for new initiatives.
  • Collaborate with Upbound customers and the open source community to foster a welcoming and supportive environment that users and contributors alike will love to be a part of.
  • Work with community users and customers to support their adoption and success with Crossplane and Upbound, by digging in to troubleshoot and remediate issues in their deployments.
  • Review and provide quality feedback on pull requests from other contributors to the project. We appreciate a keen eye for exceptional design, implementation, and craftsmanship.
  • Author design documents, documentation, user guides, and blog posts to support and promote new features that you release.
  • Promote Crossplane to increase user adoption of the project and its features at conferences, meetups and through other channels.

You are a good fit if you have...

  • Deep knowledge of Kubernetes
  • You are actively involved or have contributed to the upstream Kubernetes community.
  • Written and maintained code that interfaces with the Kubernetes API, such as operators, controllers, addons, etc.
  • Managed production Kubernetes resources and deployments using tools and languages like Kubectl, Helm, and YAML.
  • A passion for and track record of open source contribution
  • You have contributed to and/or held leadership positions in other open source projects.
  • A proven track record of technical leadership
  • You have designed and implemented distributed systems in production while exercising deep knowledge of their principals, algorithms, and tradeoffs.
  • You have created design documents for the architecture of initiatives you put forward.
  • You have architected and deployed highly scaled and reliable services, solutions, and infrastructure in multiple major cloud providers.
  • You have consistently taken multiple projects through the full software lifecycle from early designs to production deployments.
  • You have the ability to work closely with people in a wide variety of disciplines from a wide variety of backgrounds.
  • Mastery and love for the Go language
  • The experience to thrive in a globallyremote startup environment
  • You have the ability to convey your ideas and feedback, in writing, in a succinct and easily understandable manner.
  • You have worked in a startup and distributed/remote team before, and understand the unique challenges of a startup environment.
