Job Description Summary:
The scope of this position includes design, implementation, and validation of closed-loop control systems for offshore wind turbines.

About us

GE Renewable Energy is one of the world's leading offshore wind energy companies, with a portfolio of offshore wind turbines ranging from 6 MW to 14 MW that offer increased value to customers with proven performance, reliability, efficiency and availability.

We have invested more than $400 million to develop the Haliade-X, an investment that will also drive down offshore wind farms' levelized cost of energy, helping make offshore wind energy more competitive for our customers.

The Haliade-X was the industry's first 14MW offshore wind turbine to operate and is the only 12+MW offshore wind turbine platform that has been operating for over two years, specifically at its Rotterdam prototype site.

Why we come to work

At GE Renewable Energy, our engineers are always up for the challenge - and we're always driven to find the best solution.

Our projects are unique and interesting, and you'll need to bring a solution-focused, positive approach to each one to do your best.

Surrounded by committed, loyal colleagues, if you can dare to bring your ingenuity and desire to make an impact, you'll be exposed to game-changing, diverse projects that truly allow you to play your part in the green energy transition.

Essential Responsibilities:

The Performance & Operability Engineer develops/implements advanced feedback control strategies to provide high turbine performance and low mechanical loading.

This requires strong collaboration with other areas to ensure accurate loads and performance predictions over the entire range of turbine operation.

  • Develop/implement stateoftheart feedback control algorithms that increase turbine performance, lower mechanical loading of the turbine and guarantee a high availability.
  • Analyze the impact of the control strategy on the mechanical loads of the turbine in simulation and through the evaluation of measurement data
  • Develop/implement tools to process data both from simulations as well as experimental measurement campaigns
  • Incorporate wind turbine and wind farm operability requirements into the design
  • Validate turbine controls based on experimental tests results with possible involvement in turbine commissioning on site
  • Support performance issues resolution from wind farms operation, including root cause analysis using problem solving methodologies

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Master's degree in Control, Computer, Mechanical, Aerospace Engineering or similar from an accredited College or University (or equivalent experience/knowledge)
  • Experience in design and modeling of advanced closedloop/feedback control strategies
  • Proficient in Matlab/Simulink for the design, simulation and validation of controls systems
  • Good understanding of classical (transfer functions, frequency domain design, etc.) and basic knowledge in modern (statespace, optimal control, etc.) control theory
  • Experience with validation techniques such as Software in the Loop (SiL) and Hardware in the Loop (HiL)
  • Demonstrated experience working in engineering field
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Fluent in English (spoken and written)
  • Willingness to travel occasionally

Desired Characteristics:

  • Experience with wind turbine simulation tools and environments such as Bladed, Flex5, HAWC
  • Knowledge on system dynamics, controls and mechanical loads simulations
  • Experience with real time control design and modeling
  • Knowledge of C/C++
  • Wind industry experience with a focus on turbine control systems
  • Experience with GE's MarkVIe or similar PLCs
  • Familiarity and practical experience with agile methodologies
